William A. Flowers is a self-taught artist from North Carolina.
He began making functional pottery in 1969.
He built his first potters wheel using an old truck axle, odd metal parts and a bag of cement and his earliest wood firing experience nearly set his cabin on fire.
Through trial and error and experimentation, William has changed the face of Southern Folk Art.
In the early 80's, William made his first face jugs, which presented new challenges.
Over the years, William has developed a recognizable style of portraying individual personalities on his face jugs (each one of a kind) and human and animal figures; Some lifesize and some larger.
Sometimes in satire, sometimes grotesque, always unique.
Each item is created individually with years of experience with traditional Southern techniques of working with clay, glazes and firing.
William enjoys the challenge of working very large and surprising his collectors with new ideas.
He originated techniques that are now shared by other potters.
